WALLPAPER PREPARATION

Frequently Asked Questions

When hanging wallpaper, why do I need to use size as well as adhesive past?
The size assists wallpaper adhesives by ensuring the past is not absorbed into the wall. This enables the wallpaper to be moved around, allowing easy line-up of adjacent sheets. Polypaper Size is ideal for lightweight to medium weight wall coverings.

What's the best way of sticking back loose wallpaper or edges that are curling away from the wall?
When the adhesive behind wallpaper dries out, the wallpaper sometimes will lift and curl away from the wall. Use Polypaper Paste. Remember to wipe away any excess adhesive squeezed out when the wallpaper is pressed back into place. If the wallpaper is thick or heavily curled, it pays to wet it with a sponge - this makes it more flexible and easier to work with.

How do you make repairs when you start to peel off old wallpaper and it takes of the plaster surface as well?
Old plaster often becomes very weak and when you strip off wallpaper it sometimes takes the plaster with it. First of all, it is important to use a purpose formulated wallpaper stripping solution such as Polypaper Peel and not regular liquid soap. This will help to ease off the paper and reduce the danger of you making nicks in the surface, or dislodging sections of plaster.

For any plaster which has already dislodged, providing the damage is not too deep you can use Polyfilla Ready to Use Filler Skim Coat. If the damage is deep, use Polyfilla Ready to Use Filler Plaster Cracks. You don't need to apply a finishing coat of finishing skim to this unless you are going to emulsion over the top and need a perfect surface.

Can I use Polypaper Paste on any wallpaper?
No, it is ideal for lightweight to medium weight wallpapers only. For medium to heavy weight wallpaper, use Polypaper Lap Adhesive. Always follow the wallpaper manufacturer's recommendations and hanging directions.

How do I remove vinyl wallpaper?
Initially peel vinyl overlay off backing paper. Use Polypaper Peel to soften backing paper, peel off or remove with a paint scraper.

Note that coverings adhered with water resistant adhesives are very difficult to remove and a paint stripper should be used. If using this method, take care to avoid damaging the wall surfaces and ensure the area is well ventilated.
